The terrain of Breaks Interstate Park is rugged, which makes for an ideal playground for rock climbers of all levels. A series of towering sandstone cliffs offer thrilling opportunities for climbers to test their skills and there are a whopping 391 total climbs. Novices can find doable routes with the guidance of local outfitters, while seasoned climbers can take on more challenging ascents. The panoramic views from the top of the cliffs are a reward in themselves.
There’s also an extensive trail system with a range of hiking options. The Laurel Branch Trail, which follows a mountain stream, provides a leisurely hike for all skill levels. More experienced hikers can tackle the Ridge Trail, which offers stunning views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains.
The Russell Fork River, which meanders through the heart of the park, invites water enthusiasts to partake in a variety of boating activities. Kayaking and canoeing are popular choices, allowing visitors to navigate the rapids and soak in the serenity of the river.
Ziplining enthusiasts will be thrilled to discover Breaks’ Canyon Rim Zip Line where they can “fly through the Grand Canyon of the South.” It boasts more than 2,300 feet of lines and, if you’re feeling a little nervous, don’t worry — there are guides on hand to assist with any questions and ensure safety.

“We stayed in a two-room suite for two nights and found it clean, comfortable, and well equipped. It’s certainly not luxurious, but it had all of the amenities we required, including: microwave, refrigerator, stove, coffee maker, two large flat-screen TVs, a dining area, covered balcony, comfortable king size bed, and large jetted tub,” wrote a reviewer on TripAdvisor. “The suite was clean, and had obviously been recently serviced before our visit.”
For a more rustic experience, there is a large campground with 138 campsites in the park. You can easily walk to facilities like showers and picnic areas, so you’ll be connected to nature without sacrificing all convenience. Additionally, you can reserve a stay at one of the park’s Lakeside Cabins, Woodland Cottages or rustic Yurts.
