Dr. Stephen W. Nicholas, a pediatrician from New York City, has been a pioneer in providing care for children with HIV and their families since the 1980s in the Washington Heights and Harlem, New York. He realized that many of the children he was helping were from the Dominican Republic, and decided to travel to La Romana, DR, to better understand the problem. He then started the first HIV program for pregnant women in the country, to prevent vertical transmission. What began as a program to prevent HIV transmission from mother to child, very quickly grew to have a much broader mission, providing psycho-social support and health care, not only to women with HIV and their newborns, but their families and other vulnerable populations, as well as sex workers, adolescents and poor people. In 2008 a new module was opened, which provides specialized services for adolescents. Today, the clinic is independent and recognized as a clinical model of comprehensive health services in the Dominican Republic.

You will take part in an arrival orientation, a mid-stay orientation and an end of stay camp. In these camps, important subjects will be discussed, such as the participant’s relationship with the host family, project and different cultural difficulties they might be experiencing.

You may choose to take part in this program for either 12, 24 or 44 weeks. Please contact us for more details.
