LaGrange was established in 1828 and named after the Paris estate of the Marquis de La Fayette, a French hero of the American Revolution. The focal point of Lafayette Square is the fountain that features the likeness of the nobleman. During the Civil War, the city served as a significant hospital center for the Confederate Army. Visitors can explore the nearby Fort Tyler Historic Site, the location of one of the last battles of the war. The Legacy Museum On Main features artifacts and stories spanning centuries.

LaGrange also has several stately antebellum homes and historic gardens, including the Hills & Dales Estate. This estate features a 13,000-square-foot home completed in 1916 and offers a glimpse into the life of the Callaway family, who lived there for more than 100 years. You can tour the house and the garden, which has a reputation as one of the best-preserved from its era in the United States. For historic dining options, the Taste of Lemon restaurant is located in the former Second Methodist Church building, constructed in 1892 and beautifully restored. They serve southern favorites, like smothered pork chops, turnip greens, and peach cobbler.
