Water in the desert is a rarity that should be cherished — Lake Havasu City in Arizona provides the opportunity to do just that. This small town borders Lake Havasu, a state park touted as “Arizona’s playground” due to the endless options of thrill-seeking activities available: from boating, fishing, and water sports to hiking, mountain biking, and off-roading (via Go Lake Havasu). Or you can simply lounge on the beach and cool off with a dip in the water.

Strolling the walkways and adventuring through the green spaces of Lake Havasu City doesn’t exactly feel like you’re in the desert. Plus, the area can be enjoyed year-round, since sunshine is almost guaranteed 300 days out of the year. The quaint lakeside town has its own London Bridge (really, it used to span the Thames before being relocated) that makes you second guess what country you are in (per The Planet D). Make sure to explore the unique Lake Havasu Lighthouses scattered across the shore as well.

Lake Havasu is a nature-lovers dream, offering some of the most unique sights in the state. The region is home to not one — but two — wildlife refuges: Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge and Havasu National Wildlife Refuge (via Lake Havasu State Park). These areas offer an opportunity to witness wildlife flourish in their natural habitat while enjoying the unique views of water meeting the desert landscape. You might catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep, coyotes, cottontail rabbits, bobcats, and many different types of birds (per Go Lake Havasu).

There are also several state parks boasting many hiking trails where you can explore breathtaking views, gorgeous rock formations, and even old abandoned mining structures. To truly soak up all the surrounding nature, you can camp along the lake or rent a beachside cabin. Make sure to reserve a spot ahead of time and rest assured knowing that the campgrounds are close to the city, providing easy access to amenities — just in case you forget to pack anything.
