Packing Tips And Hacks

 Christine Estima

It has happened to all of us. You’ve booked your dream vacation to a hot, exotic location where there will be tons of sun, sand, and surf, but once you arrive at your secluded beach spot, you bring out your snacks from your beach cooler when suddenly a gust of wind covers your food with sand. Now your sandwich has, indeed, become a “sand”-wich.” Or, you spend an afternoon frolicking in the surf, and as you trudge out of the water and back to your towel, you accidentally kick a bunch of sand onto your food.

There are some ways you can try to plan ahead to prevent a food sandstorm, but if you’re fresh out of ideas, the internet has got you covered (as always!). Enter stage right: TikTok has come up with an incredible hack to make sure the sand doesn’t get in your food. It involves a quick trip to Ikea, grabbing two very cheap items, and creating your own sand-free food tray. This DIY hack is easy enough for anyone to master, and the comments section is hailing this hack as “genius” and “amazing.”

If you want your carrot sticks and homemade hummus to stay sand-free during a trip to the beach, TikTok user @daniellehulme has shared a genius DIY hack to make your own sand-free food tray. In her popular video, which has over 291,000 likes, we see her visit Ikea to buy a simple plastic cheese tray. She then purchases one solar plastic stake light, removes the light, and sticks the cheese tray to the stake using a hot glue gun. Now, she has a food tray on a stick. We then see her drive her tray into the sand to hold up her hummus and carrot sticks. Not only is this DIY hack sand-free; it’s also a #moneysaver!

For an extra layer of protection, you could pack snacks that come in wrappers, like granola bars, or you could wrap your homemade sandwiches in parchment paper, aluminum foil, or cling film. There are also lots of fruits you can bring, like oranges, grapefruits, watermelon, and bananas, whose peel or rind will protect the fruit from your sandy hands. But if you want a grabbable, beach-friendly, and sand-free yet impressive spread, this TikTok hack is cleverly catered to beachgoers.
