Hidden Gem: Moro Bay State Park is the Best Place to Enjoy Water Activities in Arkansas

Arkansas is renowned for its impressive natural areas, but its lesser-known parks are packed with possibilities for those interested in outdoor adventures. One of these is the Moro Bay State Park, a hidden gem nestled in the corner of Bradley County. The unique geography of the waterways in this park makes it perfect for watersports. It is located at the confluence of the Ouachita River, Moro Bay, and Raymond Lake, creating a haven for those with aquatic sensibilities.

The park even has marinas that offer everything you need to get in the water, whether a beginner or an experienced boater. From May to September, the park runs tours of the Ouachita River, perfect for those who need to build confidence in the water or want to learn more about the area. If you love scenery, camping, wildlife, and watersports, then you should add Moro Bay State Park to your Southern U.S. road trip route.

Things to do in Moro Bay State Park

The best thing to do in Moro Bay is hire a boat or a kayak and explore the park’s delightful waterways. Huge cypress trees grow in the water, so a highlight of this trip is paddling around them. There are two sandbars in the park where you can go swimming too. Some wildlife you can see while kayaking includes woodpeckers, hawks, barred owls, bald eagles, storks, and egrets. If you prefer fishing to birdwatching, there are opportunities to cast your rod throughout the year, too.

Two short yet beautiful walks are the Deer Run Hiking Trail, next to Raymond Lake, which is great for a forest view, and the Low-Water Trail, along the river. Both of them are 0.25 miles long. After all of this, you’ll be sure to need something to eat, so head to the picnic area between the lake and the river to enjoy a snack with a view. If you want another day of fun in the park, you can stay there too.

You can spend the night to make the most of the peace and quiet in this park. There are five cabins built on stilts, and their position in the canopy makes the experience of staying in them akin to being in a tree house. Inside, you’ll find everything you need, from internet access to a full kitchen, so they are perfect for couples or families who want to relax after a busy day. One of the cabins is even dog-friendly.

For those who prefer a more outdoorsy experience, there are 23 Class AAA campsites with water, electricity, and sewer hookups situated next to Raymond Lake. These can all be booked in advance on the Arkansas State Parks website. El Dorado is the nearest major city, only a 30-minute drive away, so hotels, like the well-rated Haywood El Dorado Tapestry Collection by Hilton, are there for those who want to enjoy restaurants and nightlife. If you wish to extend your Arkansas trip to another nature reserve, consider the Crater of Diamonds State Park, where you can search for real diamonds.
