Packing Tips And Hacks

Move over snackle boxes! There’s a new sheriff in town! Enter: the plastic Easter egg and egg carton snack hack. Parents everywhere can attest that the snack struggle is real — especially when you’re in it for the long haul on a road trip with a toddler, or children of any age for that matter. In fact, a 2022 survey conducted by Diono found that 38% of parents of children ages ten and under believed snacks were a major key to a successful road trip.

Fortunately, that’s where the plastic Easter egg and egg carton snack hack comes in. As it turns out, the answer to serving snacks in the back of the car on a road trip is quite simple — simply stuff them into some plastic eggs from last year’s Easter festivities and serve them in an egg carton. Not only do the plastic eggs and cartons serve as a great way to house the snacks, but it’s also a great way to let children serve themselves. Parents no longer have to worry about dislocating their shoulders while performing the backseat reach-around to pass off yet another bag of popcorn to their famished kiddos. Here’s everything to know about the new egg-ceptional way parents can streamline and organize the road trip snack game, and save their sanity too.

So what does one put in those tiny little eggs? Egg-cellent question! Goldfish crackers, cereal, popcorn, nuts, grapes, chocolate chips, marshmallows, animal crackers, and even bite-size candies are great options. Just keep in mind that all snacks served are age-appropriate. According to Pediatrics, popcorn, grapes, nuts, and even marshmallows are a major choking hazard for children under the age of four. It should also be noted that you don’t have to use all twelve eggs. As TikTok user @eatprettydarling demonstrated, you can always divide the cartons in half.

Perhaps the best part of the plastic egg and egg carton snack hack is how it cuts down on the amount of bickering in the backseat. No more fighting over who is hogging the potato chip bag or who won’t share the rice cakes, as each child has their own individual carton to grab from. And once it’s gone, it’s gone, which provides the children with a level of autonomy — they get to decide how fast or slow they run through their loot.

Another added benefit of using the plastic egg and egg carton snack hack is that it provides children with a fun activity of opening and closing the brightly colored eggs. Another way to kick it up a notch is to provide some crayons, markers, or colored pencils for the kids to personalize and decorate the cartons to their liking.
