Inspiring Hawaiian beach activities to enjoy

Once you’ve completed your hike, the beach fun gets underway. Begin by savoring the tropical scenery with few to no other visitors around to block the view. After hiking, you’ll want to cool off with a swim. The water at Makalawena Beach is perfect when the surf is calm.

Snorkeling is also great here, thanks to the coves and lava rock outcroppings to explore. It’s a chance to set your sights on colorful marine life below the waves. You can also pick up the pace of your water adventures if you’d like because bodyboarding conditions are wonderful at Makalawena Beach. Additionally, the mountain-facing side of the shoreline is home to a place where coastal birds thrive. Spanning 12 acres, Opae’ula Pond hosts red shrimp and provides opportunities to observe endangered bird species in the wild. You might even spot a wild goat making its way through the surrounding lava fields.

While Makalawena Beach is undeniably beautiful, it’s a good idea to be prepared for your visit. Be sure to pack plenty of eco-friendly sunscreen, a hat, water, and sunglasses for your journey. It’s important to note that the beach is not attended by lifeguards so you’ll want to make sure you check water conditions before you swim to stay safe. The gate at the end of the beach trail locks at 7 p.m. each evening so no matter when you arrive, allow yourself plenty of time to trek those two miles back to your vehicle.
