The heartbeat of El Tunco is in its picture-perfect beaches. The town’s main beach is Playa El Tunco, which is renowned for its consistent surf breaks, making it a haven for surf enthusiasts of all skill levels. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, Playa El Sunzal, just a short drive away, provides a more secluded beach experience, perfect for sunbathing or leisurely strolls along the shore. “Great beach. Quiet when we were there. Plenty of cafes along the front serving good local food at a decent price,” one TripAdvisor reviewer described it.

While El Tunco itself is a beach town and doesn’t have waterfalls or volcanoes within its immediate vicinity, several notable waterfalls and volcanoes are easily accessible for day trips. For example, Tamanique — which is located approximately 25 minutes from El Tunco — is home to a series of stunning waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery. A hike through the scenic landscape leads you to these refreshing cascades, providing a perfect escape from the beach scene.

The highest volcano in El Salvador, Santa Ana, is just under two hours from El Tunco. It offers a short yet rewarding hike. At the summit, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Coatepeque Lake and the surrounding landscape. The trek usually takes a few hours and is relatively easy compared to others in the country.

When the sun goes down, El Tunco’s relaxing shores transform into a lively hub of nightlife, offering a diverse range of options for nocturnal adventurers. Start your evening with a sunset cocktail at one of the beachfront bars, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. La Guitarra Bar and La Bonita Beach Club are recommended as two of the best places to enjoy a gorgeous sunset with your drink.

As the night progresses, move to the heart of the town, where you’ll find an array of bars and clubs full of energy. For the most vibrant nightlife scene, it’s recommended to visit between Thursday and Sunday — because El Tunco is a small town, those are the best nights to enjoy socialization at clubs. If you’re interested in a quieter night out, you may prefer to visit before the weekend crowds come.

Dance the night away to the beats of reggae, salsa, and electronic music, and mingle with locals and fellow travelers alike. The nightlife in El Tunco is as diverse as its visitors, ensuring there’s something for every taste, from intimate beachside gatherings to high-energy dance parties that last until the early morning hours. When in doubt of where to go, just follow the sound of the music!
