Taking a weekend trip to a lake is refreshing, and doing so in the fall adds another layer of beauty to the experience. During this time, the water reflects the brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds of turning trees, while the crisp air is complemented by campfires along the shore. It’s a magical and often peaceful time, perfect for those seeking a quiet getaway.

If you’re hoping to experience this, along with a dash of small-town charm, we recommend you head on over to a beautiful lake town in America: Hawley, Pennsylvania, home of Lake Wallenpaupack. This beautiful lake boasts 52 miles of uninterrupted shoreline and stretches 13 miles in length. Situated in the Poconos, it offers the perfect setting to immerse yourself in nature, with plenty of trails to hike near and around the water. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or with your family, Hawley, Pennsylvania, and Lake Wallenpaupack can provide the perfect fall experience for those willing to make the trip.

If you’re eager to spend time outside right away, you can start with the Wallenpaupack Lake Trail. This 2.6-mile trail runs alongside the water and through the woods, offering breathtaking views and abundant wildlife. It’s perfect for walking and biking. Please note that dogs are not allowed on this trail. However, if you want to bring your furry friend along, you can consider the Lock 31 Canal Walk or the Maple Run Ramble.

If you visit before mid-September, you have the option to rent a kayak, paddle board, or pontoon through Wallenpaupack Boat Tours & Rentals. Alternatively, you can bring your own watercraft and enjoy the lake later in the fall. Don’t forget to pack your fishing rods, as the lake is an excellent fishing spot.

To make the most of your time in the great outdoors, you can either pitch a tent or park your RV at Wilsonville Recreation and Camping Area. Tent camping is $33 per night, while RV camping is $35 per night. Please note that during holidays, the rates increase to $38 per night for tents and $40 per night for RVs.

Even if you can’t make it during that time, you can still experience the charm and sense of community in this underrated small town. Explore local businesses like Time Machine Antiques or the various shops inside the Hawley Silk Mill. Treat yourself to a meal at restaurants such as TREE Restaurant for a fancy dining experience, or Gresham’s Chop House for a more rustic atmosphere. You can also visit wineries or learn about falconry at Masters of the Sky.
