When people think of traveling to the state of New York, the Empire City is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But what if we told you that just 96 miles north of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan lies the dreamiest fall family getaway? Enter: the Hudson Valley, complete with breathtaking fall foliage, magnificent mountain views, the roaring Hudson River, rich history and culture, and tons of fun for the entire family.

If you’re coming from New York City, this charming region spanning 7,000 miles and a whopping 10 counties is easily accessible from the comfort of your vehicle or aboard a scenic train ride. Otherwise, tourists can fly directly into the area via the Albany International Airport or the Westchester County Airport. Whatever your method of travel, rest assured the journey will all be worth it once you and your loved ones feast your collective eyes on all that the Hudson Valley has to offer.

Let’s make one thing clear: the Hudson Valley is NOT sleepy, especially in the fall. Parents visiting the region will have no shortage of activities to keep their littles busy. Families can stroll through the pumpkin patches at Dykeman Farm in the town of Pawling; pick as many apples as they can hold at Apple Ridge Orchards in Warwick; get lost in the iconic labyrinth that is the corn maze at Kelder’s Farm located in Kerhonkson; or complete an easy 1.2-mile hike to Dover Stone Church in Dutchess County. (Spoiler alert: There’s a cave reminiscent of a church’s cathedral and a waterfall waiting for you.)

As one can imagine, all of those activities can work up an appetite. Fortunately, family-friendly dining options are just as plentiful in the Hudson Valley, with many offering farm-to-table fare. Terrapin, a restaurant, bistro, and bar in Rhinebeck, offers an extensive all-organic kids’ menu with free-range, hormone and antibiotic-free meat, and dairy options. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a nice waterfront view to entertain the kiddos at mealtime, look no further than Harvest on Hudson. The kids can load up on pasta and pizza, then head off to the playground conveniently located next door to the establishment. A win-win, no?

Once everyone’s bellies are full and the sun goes down, you can entertain the older kids and teens with ghost stories that are often told during the many walking tours offered at the Historic Huguenot Street — a national historic landmark district in New Paltz.

Hudson Valley offers plenty of places for the fam to bunk up

Gone are the days when it was hard to find a place to stay while visiting the Hudson Valley. These days, the region offers plenty of options for families looking to stay overnight. If you’re willing to splurge, the all-inclusive Mohonk Mountain resort in New Paltz is an excellent option for families. Guests enjoy three meals a day as part of the package and can swim in the indoor pool, take fitness classes, take guided hikes, and even play golf and tennis. The resort also offers guided rock climbing, horseback riding, spa treatments, and childcare services for an added fee. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly alternative, consider booking a stay at the kitschy, family-owned and operated Roosevelt Inn located in Hyde Park.

Hudson Valley visitors looking for a more unique experience should consider the Saugerties Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast. Who doesn’t want to check “sleep in a historical lighthouse” off their bucket list? However, potential guests should keep in mind that bookings are only available Thursday through Sunday, and the residence offers no air conditioning. Or better yet, consider staying in a 1902 train depot and caboose in Accord, NY. The residence includes two bedrooms and two bathrooms and can be booked through Airbnb. All aboard to Hudson Valley!
