The state of New York offers a diverse landscape, encompassing beautiful forests and hills, as well as the bustling metropolis of the largest city in the United States. Whether you prefer the charm of small, secluded towns or towering skyscrapers, New York has something for everyone. With 180 spectacular state parks to choose from, nature lovers also have a plethora of options to explore. If you have a particular affinity for waterfalls, we highly recommend visiting Watkins Glen State Park, which boasts a whopping 19 of them.
Watkins Glen State Park spans 778 acres and features a lake, numerous waterfalls, forests, and an extensive network of hiking trails. During the summer, visitors can cool off in the swimming pool, while winter offers opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing. Regardless of the season, you can have a splendid and peaceful adventure here. Just remember to wear sturdy and waterproof shoes.
Which trails to hike

Watkins Glen State Park is a great destination suitable for people of all ages. While those with little hiking experience or traveling with children should avoid the more difficult trails, there are still several easy options that are accessible for kids and beginners. One of the most popular waterfalls in the park is Rainbow Falls, located along the Gorge Trail. This path offers the best views of all the waterfalls. However, be prepared to climb some stairs if you choose to embark on this route.
For pet owners who enjoy hiking, you’re in luck. Dogs are allowed in the park as long as they have proof of rabies inoculation. However, they are limited to two designated trails (South Rim Trail and the Indian Trail) and must be kept on a leash at all times. If you plan to bring your pet camping, make sure to call ahead and inquire about the specific campsites where pets are allowed.
Camping and when to visit

In addition to hiking, Watkins Glen State Park offers a playground and fields where kids can play and burn some energy. If you plan to stay longer than a day, you have the option to camp overnight. You can bring your own tent or RV, or you can rent a cabin. If you bring your own shelter, the cost is between $18 and $30 per night. Alternatively, cabins are available for $58 per night. Please note that between May and October, there is an additional $10 entrance fee.
Peak season at the park is during the summer months, so expect larger crowds, especially on weekends. Visiting in the fall is highly recommended, as the crowds will be smaller and you can enjoy the stunning views of the changing trees. The park is conveniently located in the middle of the town of Watkins Glen, with its entrance on Main Street, making it easily accessible when driving through the area. Next time you feel the urge to hike or take in breathtaking sights in one of America’s most beautiful places, grab your boots and head over to the gorgeous Watkins Glen State Park for a delightful adventure.
