Kroya Waterfall in Indonesia

Bali, the famed Island of the Gods, is a paradise not just for those seeking serene shores or cultural experiences but also for adrenaline junkies. Amidst Bali’s gorgeous tropical forests, Buddhist temples, and beachfront clubs, hidden treasures await in the form of natural waterfalls. Among over 100 cascades in Bali, Kroya Waterfall stands out as a not-to-be-missed destination for anyone looking to enjoy a natural waterslide.

Kroya Waterfall is situated in the northern region of Bali, near the village of Sambangan, known as the “Secret Garden” of Bali. This area is famous for its natural beauty and a series of waterfalls. Kroya is one of seven waterfalls in the area, including the more famous Aling-Aling, Twin, and Pucuk waterfalls and the stunning Blue Lagoon. Each of these falls has unique characteristics and charm. While Kroya might not be as famous as some of Bali’s other waterfalls, its uniqueness lies in the natural slide formed by the waterfall’s smooth rocks.

Reaching Kroya Waterfall is an adventure in itself. It involves a scenic 30-minute trek through the Secret Garden’s stunning landscape, passing through beautifully green rice fields, local villages, and marigold parks. The trek is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels. However, around 10 minutes in, there is a 0.2-mile stretch of steep stairs — make sure to wear appropriate footwear. As you approach the waterfall, the sound of cascading water and the cool, misty air sets the stage for the experience ahead.

“Never Try, Never Know. Test your Adrenalin…!” reads the sign at Kroya Waterfall. Nearly 40 feet high, Kroya’s cool waters slide down a natural rock formation before plunging into a turquoise pool. The smooth, sloping surface of the rock creates an exhilarating waterslide. Thrill-seekers can climb to the top and let the rushing water propel them down. The sensation is akin to a water park slide but in the heart of Mother Nature.

Beyond the waterslide, you can also do some cliff diving! There is an option to jump from either a 33-foot or a 50-foot cliff — choose wisely or try both. For those who prefer something more relaxed, the 10-foot-deep crystal-clear pool at the bottom of the waterfall is perfect for a refreshing swim (and to joyfully observe people slipping, sliding, and crashing into the water). The surrounding area offers picturesque spots for enjoying the tranquility of the Balinese jungle. Additionally, the nearby Aling-Aling Waterfall is only a short walk away. It offers a jaw-dropping 115-foot-high cascade, ideal for sightseeing and photography. No cliff-diving or waterslides there, however.

As with any natural site, visitors are encouraged to keep the environment clean, avoid using non-biodegradable products, and respect the wild habitat. The beauty of Kroya Waterfall and its surroundings depends on the conscientiousness of every traveler. Visiting the waterfall and the Sambangan Village also offers a glimpse into Balinese culture — an opportunity to interact with locals and learn about their traditional way of life.

Travel tips for Kroya Waterfall

The best time to visit Kroya Waterfall is in the summer. The weather is more predictable, and the water levels are ideal for enjoying the slide. Visiting during the wet season would make for a dangerous and muddy hike — not advised. Visit during the early morning or late afternoon when the waterfall is less crowded. There are a few things you should bring for your trip: a swimsuit, water, some snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and good walking shoes (plus water shoes, if you have any).

For travel cinematographers, bring a GoPro (with a float and case) to capture that epic sliding descent. Consider renting a scooter (parking is available near the trekking starting point) or joining a tour with Get Your Guide. The travel time from Denpasar is approximately three to four hours. From Ubud, it takes a little over two hours, and from Canggu, around an hour and a half. Signals in the area can be spotty, so make sure you download an offline map beforehand.

There are different tickets you can buy for your Secret Garden experience. A 20,000 IDR ($1.25) ticket will only grant hiking access. A 150,000 IDR ($9.50) ticket will allow you to access and enjoy the waterfalls with a guide and a life jacket — this is the most popular option. Finally, a 250,000 IDR ($15.80) or 500,000 IDR ($31.75) ticket includes extras such as guided tours and more intense jungle treks.
