Philpott Lake in Virginia

Virginia is incredible for getting close to nature, and camping in one of its scenic areas can take this experience to the next level. One wonderful location to pitch up is Goose Point Park, a campground close to the banks of Philpott Lake in the rural heart of this green state. This grand lake is not to be underestimated, as it has 100 miles of coastline to explore. Since it covers 2,900 acres of land, you’re bound to find a quiet spot for yourself.

This setting is stunning to behold, as you can see the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains behind the lake. Naturally, it’s the perfect area for outdoor activities like paddling, boating, and fishing. Wildlife is also attracted to the lake, so keep your camera ready to snap any interesting species you may see here. This lake and campground offer so much to do in this scenic area that they are a must-visit when taking any mountain road trip in Virginia.

Goose Point Park offers three camping loops with three different types of sites: standard without electricity, standard with electricity hookups, and double spaces with electricity. In the peak season, which runs from April to October, these cost $22, $30, and $60 per night. There are 63 spots in total, and 53 have electricity and water, as well as sizes suitable for different lengths of RV. To book your spot in advance, head to the Recreation.gov website.

This park has great facilities for guests, including an amphitheater for events, a playground for children, and a parking lot. A boat ramp, dock, swimming area, and fishing pier are on the lake. Additionally, campers can access drinking water, flushing toilets, showers, and a dump station. There is also a campsite and picnic shelter for groups. This wealth of facilities makes Goose Point the ideal stopover on a once-in-a-lifetime, breathtaking road trip.

Things to do at Philpott Lake

One of the most wonderful things at Philpott Lake is getting on the water. Fortunately, swimming is allowed at Goose Point Park’s beach. You can access Philpott Blueway from the lake — these are water trails you can canoe, kayak, or boat around. There is a trail around Goose Point for those who like to stay on land. Anglers will enjoy fishing off the pier for bass species, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. This campground is also known as one of the best places in Virginia to hook a walleye.

Wild turkeys, woodpeckers, nuthatches, kingfishers, and vultures are among the birds you might see here. Animal lovers should also look out for deer, raccoons, and squirrels. Just next door to the Goose Point Campground is Fairy Stone State Park. It has wonderful hiking trails, paddle boats, and hydrobikes. It even has a playground on its lake. Whatever you choose to do, you’re bound to want to return to this magnificent campground repeatedly.
