An island that once served as a pasture for a nearby village is now a peaceful vacation destination. Ulko-Tammio is one of many islands off of Finland’s coast, one of the most peaceful countries in the world. After being used as a former military fort and grazing ground, it has become a popular spot amongst nature enthusiasts. Ulko-Tammio is located just under 19 miles away from Hamina, a town with a population of about 20,000. The contrast is stark between the municipality and the uninhabited island. Rather than buildings and sidewalks, Ulko-Tammio consists of lush forests, a rocky shore, and dozens of nature trails, making it a perfect escape from the buzz of city life.

The island provides a unique opportunity for its visitors to disconnect. Rather than posting on Instagram stories, going Live on Facebook, or sending photos on Snapchat, Parks and Wildlife Finland asks that its visitors leave their phones behind and be fully present in the park. “We encourage visitors to put their phones away voluntarily and to focus their senses on nature rather than on their phones,” Parks and Wildlife Finland’s Manager of Visitor Management Joel Heino told Travel + Leisure.

Benefits of going phone-free

Disconnecting from your phone has numerous benefits. Improved sleep, reduced anxiety and depression, and increased productivity are just a few. Removing screens coupled with spending time in nature, which has benefits of its own relating to physical and mental health, is a wonderful way to reset and refresh. Simply walking can give you a boost in creativity. Ulko-Tammio gives you the chance to take in beautiful sights and scenery while reaping the benefits of a screen detox. “People are not meant to be glued to screens all the time,” psychologist and program manager at Sosped Foundation Terhi Mustonen told Travel + Leisure. “Even a short digital fast can be useful and improve our well-being.”

For those hoping to find some peace and solitude away from smartphones, venturing to Ulko-Tammio could be your answer. You need to access the island via boat, so people come in on sea cruises, water taxis, or even their own boats. Once there, you have the option to stay for a couple of hours or overnight in a cabin or tent.

History and wildlife of Ulko-Tammio

Ulko-Tammio also offers attractions for those fascinated by history. The military fort, constructed during a ceasefire in the 20th century and used during the Continuation Wars, remains today, giving you the opportunity to explore. Additionally, you can see the cannon stands and two museum cannons. While there wasn’t combat on the island at any point, there were trenches and a cave that would’ve served as shelter. You can see all this and more.

Ulko-Tammio also has opportunities for those more interested in wildlife than history. Birdwatchers especially can enjoy the birdwatching tower located on the island’s highest point. Millions of birds cross Ulko-Tammio on their migration paths, meaning you’ll have plenty of opportunities to add to your birds-sighted list. So, whether you choose to be immersed in nature or entertained by history, this phone-free island has the potential to be a paradise of solitude for you.

Going without your device can be a worthwhile challenge; being surrounded by nature makes it easier. With that being said, the phone-free rule isn’t enforced, but it is strongly encouraged. The island has full cellular coverage for those who do need to access their phone. The most popular time to visit the island is in the summer, making it one of the best places for summer trips.
